Abstract
504,990. Shank stiffeners for shoes. MUSEBECK, G. E., and MUSEBECK SHOE CO. July 23, 1938, No. 21920. [Class 17 (ii)] The outer edge of a shank stiffener for boots and shoes beneath the fifth metatarsal and cuboid bones has greater stiffness than beneath the remainder of the foot to provide normal support for the base of the fifth metatarsal when this loses contact with the ground due to elevation of the foot by a shoe heel. The shank stiffener may comprise a metal plate 10 extending from the metatarsus, where it is curved to support the arch, to rearward of the heel breast. It is stiffened at its outer edge by a reinforcing member 17 which rests in a longitudinal groove 16 in the upper face of the stiffener and which is extended rearwards and flattened and perforated for attachment to the insole or sole.
