[Class 17 (ii).] In order to avoid completely or reduce substantially the necessity of a roughing operation on the lasting allowance of a shoe upper to which a sole is to be adhesively attached, the marginal edge of the upper, either before or after assembly on a last, has a series of parallel or substantially parallel rows of stitching inserted therein to afford a secure anchorage for the cement. Such stitching or quilting may be used alone or it may, as shown, serve to secure a strip or strips 14 of material to the lower edge of the upper to reinforce it and serve as an anchorage for the cement. The strip or tape may be cut on the bias and may be substantially wider than the lasting allowance of the upper, or it may be narrower. It may extend around the tip from heel breast to heel breast, or, as shown, the portion at the tip 20 may be omitted and replaced by lines of stitching or by a roughening of the shoe upper. The lines 18 of stitching are set further in from the edge of the upper at the toe to allow for the greater lasting allowance usually provided there.
