503,847. Base-exchanging substances. INFILCO, Inc. Oct. 14, 1937, No. 27950. Convention date, Oct. 19, 1936. [Class 1 (iii)] A base-exchanging substance is obtained from an insoluble material containing amphoteric oxide by mixing it with material including alkali in soluble form and silica and with sufficient water to form a mud, allowing the mud to set, and subjecting the set mass to heat without dehydration thereof to obtain a hard friable'solid mass. The insoluble material may be bauxite, kaolin or other clays, an oxide of iron such as limonite, or materials containing oxides of chromium, vanadium, or manganese. Silica may be supplied by kaolin, flint, quartz, or alkali silicate and alkali by hydroxide or silicate. Kaolin, when used, may be precalcined to 1300‹ F., to reduce its moisture content, and calcined bauxite may also be employed. The heating of, the set mass may be effected in an autoclave, with steam at atmospheric or under increased pressure.
