Abstract
A method of producing a heat resistant and/or thermal insulating material comprising mixing an aggregate consisting predominantly of perlite and having a dry density in the range of 48 to 136 Kg/m3 with an aqueous solution of sodium silicate or with sodium silicate powder and water so that the solids, including dissolved solids, amount to 55-75% by weight of the mixture, compressing a body of the mixture and drying said body, being the factor by which said body is compressed substantially the one given by the equation **(See formula)** where CP is the ratio, for a constant area of the body, between the body heights before and after compression, DD is the dry density of the compressed material, WD is the wet density and PS is the proportion of solids in the total mix.
