Abstract
Residual clays, especially china clay, are converted into pure kaolin by separation of silica and other silicates by intensive mechanical disintegration at a peripheral speed of at least 1000 metres per minute, preferably in the colloid mill described in Specification 155,836, with water and with or without a dispersator, the kaolin being selectively colloidalized. Suitable dispersators are water-glass, tanning agents, humus and humic acids or their compounds, saponin and other soap-like frothforming substances, or soluble silicates, aluminates, ferrocyanides, sulphocyanides, and borates. In an example, potash water-glass is employed as dispersion accelerator. The resulting dispersion may be concentrated by ultra-filter presses &c. as described in Specifications 155,834 and 181,023, [Class 46, Filtering &c.], and the paste dried. The colloidal clay may be used in the manufacture of colloidal inks with clay, as a filler in rubber mixings &c.
