[Class 135] - In a safety valve for steam boilers and the like of the kind in which a piston p loosely mounted on the main valve stem h and working in a steam chamber o gives an increased lift to the main valve g when steam is admitted to its underside by the opening, at a predetermined pressure, of an auxiliary valve x, the piston and the steam chamber are mounted on the upper end of the valve spring casing n remote from the valve casing a. A passage v for condensate is provided in the base of the steam chamber o, and a further passage w is formed in a cup-shaped stem guide i held between the spring casing and the valve casing. The spring casing has an opening n<1> to the atmosphere. The auxiliary valve x is preferably integral with a piston y and may be set to open at the same pressure as the main valve or at a higher pressure. Its outlet t communicates with the base. of the steam chamber through which a spring-regulating sleeve m passes.
