Abstract
548,801. Safety-valves. SHAW, SON & GREENHALGH, Ltd., J., and BROOK, H. March 20, 1941, No. 3785. [Class 135] A safety-valve has an annular chamber g formed above the valve seat f to which steam is admitted when the valve is cracked open, said chamber being connected by passages d<SP>1</SP> to the lower end of a cylinder e<SP>2</SP> containing a floating piston h. This piston has an upwardly projecting stem h<SP>1</SP> slidably mounted on the valve spindle i and normally spaced a suitable distance below the lower spring abutment j which rests on a shoulder i<SP>1</SP> on the spindle. The valve member is slidably mounted in a ported liner e the lower end of which is adapted to overlap the upper end of the valve seat. When the valve is cracked open steam at high pressure passes into the annular chamber g and thence through the passages d<SP>1</SP> into the cylinder e<SP>2</SP> lifting the piston into contact with the spring abutment giving the valve a high initial lift.
