Abstract
635,751. Fluid-actuated valves. SMITH, E. G. G., and MASTERS, P. D. Dec. 4, 1943, No. 20303. [Class 135] In a cut-out valve for a fluid-pressure line, the fluid flows in at B, past a restriction 10, through grooves 11 in a piston assembly 8, Fig. 1, and out through a port A. The inlet fluid is applied through a passage 12 to the top of the member 8 and the outlet fluid is applied through a passage 13 to the underside thereof on which a spring 9 also acts. When a drop of pressure occurs on the outlet side, as, for example, on the breaking of the fluid line, the fluid pressure will be removed from the underside of the piston 8 and the inlet pressure acting on the top will move it downwards to shut off the flow. In a modification, a ported, sliding sleeve 14, Fig. 5, surrounds the piston 8 which latter is provided with two grooves 11. In the open position, both sleeve and piston are forced to their uppermost position by outlet fluid pressure against the action of loading spring 16. When a fall of pressure occurs on the outlet side, inlet pressure applied through apertures 18, 19 forces the sleeve downwards but keeps the piston 8 in its upper position, as shown. In a further modification, a separate loading spring surrounding spring 16 is applied to the top of sleeve 14.
