Abstract

518,482. Combined pressure and vacuum release valves. HURST, W.F.F. MARTIN-, and BRITISH THERMOSTAT CO., Ltd. July 25, 1938, No. 22048. [Class 135] A combined pressure and vacuum release valve, with a movable wall or plate attached to a metal bellows exposed on one side to the internal pressure and on the other to atmospheric pressure, has a check valve, mounted on the wall or plate and opening inwards w h e n internal pressure falls below external, and a fixed abutment to open the check valve when the wall or plate moves outwards upon rise of internal pressure. Internal pressure below atmospheric moves spring-loaded valve 9 off synthetic rubber seat 10 on plate 7 to admit air from passages 2 through holes in guide sleeve 8. Internal pressure above atmospheric causes bellows 4 to move plate 7 against the action of spring 14 until the stem 11 of valve 9 abuts against adjustable screw 16 ; further increase of pressure moves plate 7 away from valve 9 to relieve pressure. In a modification, passages 2 open into chamber 17 to which a pipe is coupled to lead away escaping steam or vapour.
