[Classes 40 (iii) and 40 (v)] A low-pass filter for providing automatic tone-control in a wireless receiver comprises inductance L (which may be the leakage inductance of the coupling transformer) and a thermionic capacity comprising an adjustable condenser 31 and variable-mu valve. The control voltage is derived from the automatic volume control or automatic selectivity control lead and the higher its value the higher the frequency of the cut-off point. Adjustment of the condenser controls the shape of the characteristic and may be used to give a strong peak near the cutoff point to compensate for the effect of high selectivity. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 3 the condenser and the control lead are connected to different grids of a heptode and the voltage of the control lead is controllable manually by a slider 77 as well as automatically. Possible values of the circuit components are given on the Specification. French Specification 768,306 is referred to.
