500,160. Harpoons ; fuzes. CORNELIUSSEN, C., and CORNELIUSSEN, E. May 16, 1938, No. 14545. Convention date, Jan. 31. [Class 9 (i)) A shell-harpoon provided with a time-fuze is also fitted with a friction-fuze apparatus so that normally explosion takes place within the body of a whale as a result of the friction-fuze apparatus, but, in the event of a miss, or a failure of the friction-fuze apparatus, safe destruction of the harpoon is ensured by the time-fuze. The harpoon head a, Fig. 1, may have screwed thereto a shell c, and carries a time-fuze d and friction-fuze connected through a passage f to the powder chamber g. A shield h mav guard the friction-fuze from injury. The friction-fuze is coupled to a seizing claw i &c. which is adjustable along the length of the shaft to regulate the depth to which the harpoon penetrates the whale before explosion occurs. The friction-fuze and the time-fuze may be mounted within a cylinder screwed into the head of the harpoon. In a further modification, a time-fuze charge i<11>, Fig. 3, ignited by the percussion of a cap f<11>, burns until a passage k<11> enables the main charge c<11> to be ignited, this charge normally being ignited by a friction-fuze b<11>
