Abstract

414,005. Projectiles. BRANDT, E. W., 101, Boulevard Murat, Paris. March 22, 1934, No. 9060. Convention date, April 7, 1933. [Class 9 (i).] An explosive projectile specially constructed for use against aircraft consists of a thick hollow base 1 of a very dense material to which is attached a curved tapered member 2 having thin walls. The centre of gravity of the projectile is preferably located to the rear of the connection between the members 1 and 2, and the mass of the base is preferably concentrated near its periphery to obtain the maximum gyroscopic effect. In the construction shown in Fig. 1, the member 2 is connected directly to the base and has a rearward extension on which the driving bands 4 are formed. It is preferably composed of duralumin while the base is of tungsten or tungsten alloy. In a modification, Fig. 2, the gyroscopic effect is increased by disposing an annular mass 8 of high density around the base, the mass being held in position by an intermediate member 7 which constitutes the driving band. The propulsive effect of the gases on the projectile is increased by forming a cup-shaped depression 15 in the base 1. In another modification, a number of rings 11, Fig. 5, adapted to break into small fragments, constitute a part of the peripheral portion of the base 1. The member 2 is attached to the base by means of an intermediate member 12 and is provided at the nose with time and percussion fuzes 14, 13. The percussion fuze may be of the type described in Specifications 383,105 and 392,478. The base of the projectile, in a further modification, may be provided with a detachable propulsive basal member of the type described in Specification 410,326.
