Abstract
572,953. Projectile fuzes. MIDGLEY, A. H. April 4, 1942, No. 4518. [Class 9 (i)] Projectile fuzes of the kind in which two adjacent lengths of lead-covered " Bickford " fuze are separated by a disc having apertures through which the flame can pass from one length of fuze to the other, has a manuallyoperable cutter carried externally of an adjusting sleeve so that after the sleeve has been set, the cutter can be operated by hand to strip the lead from the fuze lengths. The fuze lengths e are disposed in grooves d in the fuze body and are separated by a disc g; one end of one fuze connects to the percussion cap b and one end of the other fuze connects to the explosive c through an inclined portion f. A sleeve h is provided for time adjustment and this sleeve carries a cutter m adjacent a notched portion of the disc, so that after the sleeve has been set, the cutter may be actuated to strip the lead from the fuze lengths. The striker mechanism for a bomb released from aircraft is of the wind-vane released kind described in Specification 568,316, and the vane is normally enclosed in a cap p sealed by a rubber sleeve q to the fuze body and which is pulled from the fuze body on discharge by a wire connected to the plane.
