Abstract

577,011. Projectile fuzes. MIDGLEY, A. H. June 7, 1941, No. 7224. [Class 9 (i)] A time fuze for projectiles of the kind in which a lead-covered fuze of variable length is interposed between the primer and the main explosive, as described in Specification 124,774, [Class 9 (i)], has the lead covering perforated at intervals before final assembly in the fuze body, so that the use of a perforating tool after assembly is obviated. The perforations e are made at regular intervals and the length of fuze is then doubled on itself so that the perforations are superposed and the fuze inserted in grooves in the fixed portions a, a<1> of the fuze body, thereby connecting the primer b to the main detonator c. The superposed fuze lengths are separated by an apertured plate f attached to a rotatable graduated sleeve g, and the time is set by rotation of the sleeve to bring an aperture f in the plate in alignment with corresponding apertures in the two fuze portions. In a modification, two separate superposed fuze rings may be used.
