Abstract

516,818. Projectiles; bombs. SAGEB SOC. ANON. DE GESTION ET D'EXPLOITATION DE BREVETS. June 27, 1938, No. 18962. Convention date, June 28, 1937. [Class 9 (i)] Relates to projectiles and bombs of the kind described in Specification 489,876, in which a reaction propulsion charge discharges through laterallydisposed nozzles on the periphery of the projectile. According to the invention, the projectile,. whether an artillery shell or aircraft bomb, has an outer casing of streamline form, inside which is carried near the centre of gravity of the whole projectile, the offensive charge in an armour - piercing or other shell body. Fig. 1 shows an artillery projectile having a stream - lined outer casing the front end @ of which has an inflected curvature, as described in Specification 507,107, and both the front and rear ends of which contain propulsive reaction charges which discharge, when ignited, through lateral nozzles 4, 5, respectively. The nozzles are provided in a ring 3 within which is mounted a 'shell 1 carrying the offensive charge 9. G indicates the centre of gravity of the whole projectile. The charge 9 may be exploded, on impact, by a percussion fuze 11 connected by a tube 12 to a detonator 13 in the shell 1. Driving bands 17, 18 are arranged as shown. Fig. 5 shows an aerial bomb in which the reaction jets 5 for the the charge 22 are located in front of the centre of gravity G, and in which the shell 30 containing the offensive charge is of bulbous form at 60. An ignition means for the reaction charge 22 is provided at 15. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the subject-matter of Specifications 516,463 and 516,865. Other forms of projectiles and bombs are also described, including means for assembling a stream-lined projectile and a cartridge case by means of the rear driving band and a sealing band located in rear of the driving band. This subjectmatter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
