Abstract

538,551. Illuminating projectiles. SOC. HOLDING GENERALE DE BREVETS SOBRE SOC. ANON. July 28, 1939, No. 21936. Convention date, July 30, 1938. [Class 9 (i)] A parachute flare projectile comprises an intermediate cylindrical part 4 between the nose part and a tapered rear part 1 fitted with tail fins 2, the parachute 14 being contained mainly in the tapered rear part and the flare 10 in the cylindrical part just behind the ejecting charge 9 and the nose fuze 8. As shown in Fig. 1, the cylindrical part 4 has a reduced front extension 6 enclosing a hollow head piece 7 to which the fuze is attached, the outer shape of this front part being concavo-convex. Ignition is transmitted from the ejecting charge 9 to the flare 10 through a hole 11 and quick matches 13. A ring 3 is inserted between the cylindrical part 4 and the tapered rear part 1. The ring 3 forms a seat for the rear end of the flare. The cylindrical part 4 is secured to the ring by punchings 18 or by screws which yield to the explosion of the ejecting charge 9. A split gas check ring 17 is fitted in a groove in the ring 3. A socket 21 for a propellant cartridge is frictionally gripped to the tail fins 2 as described in Specification 538,712. In a modification, the parachute is packed in a split tapered casing and a spring is provided axially in a wooden block behind the parachute to expel the parachute from the tapered rear part when the expelling charge separates the parts.
