Abstract
584,187. Projectiles. JANECEK, F. K. Aug. 29, 1941, Nos. 11076/41 and 9004/42. [Class 9 (i)] A projectile for use with a converging bore firearm as described in Specification 521,388, is provided with two deformable portions arranged along its axis, the forward portion forming an enclosed space between it and a sleeve or core and serving to centralise the projectile while the rear portion serves to receive the explosive force. The deformable portions may be so arranged with respect to the centre of gravity of the projectile, that, after deformation, the centre of gravity has not appreciably shifted. In one form, Fig. 1, the body 10 is provided with a detachable nose 11 and with two shouldered portions 13, 19 on which are mounted the deformable members 17, 23 respectively, the front member enclosing an annular space and the rear member an annular space 22. In another form, the front and rear deformable members are mounted at the ends of a common sleeve enclosing a core and which is provided with an internal annular projection to engage a recess in the core ; alternatively, the deformable portions may be separated by a sleeve mounted upon an extension of the nose which is keyed to the core member. In a further form, the deformable portions are formed integrally with an internally 'tapered sleeve adapted to be secured to the core member by a central screw with a flanged head to engage a recess in the sleeve or an inturned portion on the sleeve may be adapted to engage a shaped central aperture in the core member and be expanded therein by a tapered pin. In a still further form, Fig. 6, the! front deformable member 66 ,engages a recess on an extension of the nose 62 while the rear deformable flange member 53 fits on to the core 50 and is linked to the hose extension by interfitting ribs and recesses which are caused to engage by pressing the nose extension inwardly on to the rear deformable member after the core has been inserted. A separate driving sleeve 65 is secured in a recess in the nose. The front deformable portion may be provided with escape apertures 67 for the air, or, if lubricant is enclosed, to allow its escape. In still other forms, the nose may be screwed to an extension sleeve which carries the two deformable members. In still another form for practice shots, the main body member 86, Fig. 10, is formed integrally with the rear deformable flange 88 and carries at its front end the front deformable member 66 and a separate driving band 65. For a high explosive projectile, an internal space 89, Fig. 11, is provided in a body member 61 formed integrally with a rear deformable flange member 53 and adapted to carry in a recess the front deformable member 66 ; the nose 62 is screwed on to the front end of the body member and is provided with a perforation 90 to carry a fuze.
