Abstract

582,290. Harpoons. TROUTON, R. DE B., and BJOERNSGAARD, P. Aug. 31, 1944, No. 16617. [Class 9 (i)] Relates to explosive heads of whaling harpoons, and consists in making the casing of the explosive charge of a mouldable non- metallic substance, sufficiently rigid when cold or dry to ensure penetration into the body of the whale, but the.fragments of which are capable of being softened by the heat or moisture of the whale's body. The object of the invention is to avoid damage to the knives used in cutting up the body of the whale through fragments of metal that would be left in the body if a metal casing were disrupted inside it. In the construction shown, the shaft 1, slotted for attachment of a line, is linked to a part 5, to which the casing 8 is screwed. The casing is made of compressed paper strips treated with glue or the like. Vanes 9, which are pre ferably non-metallic, are provided to prevent the harpoon from rotating during flight, and may be moulded integrally with the casing or screwed into grooves therein. The usual means are provided for detonating the explosive charge. As shown, these may comprise a fuze cord 16 which leads to a detonator charge 12 and is ignited by a cap 20, mounted on a hammer 18, when the harpoon is fired. Barbs 6 are also provided to embed themselves in the whale's body in known manner. The explosive head may be strengthened by a central steel rod which, being so placed, is not likely to be broken up by the explosion.
