Abstract

778,900. Explosive projectiles &c. MINISTER OF SUPPLY. July 17, 1945 [May 23, 1944], No. 9976/44. Class 9 (1). In order to produce the maximum efficiency of fragmentation when the casing of a projectile &c. containing a high explosive charge is disrupted, the surface of the charge adjacent to the casing is provided with a series of grooves arranged in a suitable pattern. For this purpose, a thin liner 1 (e.g. of paper stiffened with shellac, or of metal) may be fitted within the main body 2 of the projectile, the liner having embossed therein a number of sets of short longitudinal grooves by which corresponding grooves are moulded on the surface of the contained charge. The sets of grooves 3 are arranged in distinct zones as shown in Fig. 2, the grooves in any one zone being staggered relatively to those in an adjoining one. The invention may be applied to bombs in which the main casing is made of wound wire or of an assembly of separate rings. The grooves in the fluted liner then extend longitudinally along the whole length of the charge.
