Abstract

The hand grenade has a fuse delaying bursting after the striking of the explosive firing cap, so as to ensure that the thrower is at a safe enough distance. Around the propulsive detonating charge and in a casing which disintegrates with the detonation is a charge of small prefragmented metal bodies. These have a mortal penetration effect at a predetermined distance from the bursting point considerably less than the safe distance. The fragments are shaped so that they are ineffective at distances in excess of 20m, the fragments having a lethal effect at distances up to 5m.
