Abstract

542,463. Hand grenades. COBAN, H. Jan. 11, 1940, No. 630. [Class 9 (i)] A hand grenade comprises inner and outer shell members mounted for relative rotation, whereby a movable member is operated to allow a firing pin free movement towards a firing charge, so that, under impact, the grenade is exploded. The shells 1, 19 are crenated to split up easily into pieces, and the inner shell is mounted on a pointed end 20 and a ball bearing 21 in the outer shell. The inner shell is provided with a central cylinder 3 holding a charge of fulminate 7 and a resiliently mounted firing pin 11, the head 9 of which is disposed just on the level of the annular ring of fulminate but is normally prevented from contacting therewith by a sleeve 14 having a screwed extension 17 coacting with a pin 18 disposed in the outer shell member. The sleeve is adapted for longitudinal movement only in the inner shell member, by means of a splined connection 15, 16, and moves to uncover the firing pin when the shell members are relatively rotated on the grenade being flung from the hand of the operator. On impact pins 12 and 13 in the inner shell member cause vibration of the percussion pin which fires the fulminate. A safety cap 24 having a depending projection 25 to engage a slot in the screw 17 normally prevents relative rotation of the shell members.
