Abstract
808,197. Ammunition fuzes. NEDERLANDSCHE MACHINEFABRIEK ARTILLERIE-INRICHTINGEN. Oct. 19, 1956 [Jan. 24, 1956], No. 31878/56. Class 9(1) A percussion fuze for rotated projectiles has a firing pin 2 locked by a spring-pressed bolt 3 and is stressed by a compression spring 5 which bears against a collar 6 recessed to house a ball 8. When the projectile leaves the gun, the ball 8 moves outwards, due to centrifugal force, to bear against am inclined surface 9 in the fuze body 1. The bolt 3 then moves outwards against the action of its spring and releases the pin 2. A disc 12 bearing against the spring 5 is mounted on a screw 13 secured in the body 1 and has one or more peripheral grooves 14 into which enter balls 15 adapted to run in a helical groove 16 in the body 1. As the projectile spins the ball 15 moves rearwardly along its groove 16 and in so doing turns the disc on the pin 13, whereby the disc moves towards the striker and tensions the spring 5. Thus the greater angular velocity, the greater is the tension produced in the spring in a given time. As the angular velocity decreases, the centrifugal force on ball 8 decreases until a velocity is reached at which due to the thrust of spring 5 the ball 8 moves inwards and the firing pin is released and driven by its spring against the percussion cap 4. In a modification the screw supporting the pressure disc 12 is omitted and the movement of the disc is controlled by balls housed in radial openings in the disc and bearing against the inner surface of the fuze body.
