Abstract

497,523. Valves ; oil engines. BAER, A. March 11, 1938, No. 7654. [Classes 7 (iii) and 7 (vi)] In engines with rotary valves having a seating-member arranged between the cylinder and the valve, the seating-plate bearing against the valve is made up of a number of parts arranged with gaps between each other, and between themselves and the remainder of the seating-member, to check the flow of heat and consequent distortion. The roughness of the contacting surfaces may be sufficient to provide the gaps. Fig. 1 shows a rotary valve 5 arranged above a cylinder 1 with a seating- member 4 interposed, the seating-plate of which is composed of two side parts 8 and a central part 11, gaps being formed at 14, 15 and 16, Fig. 2. The lower part of the seating- member may be of a metal of good heatconductivity, such as aluminium bronze or grey cast iron, in the case of Otto engines, or of a material of poor conductivity, such as porcelain or steatite, in Diesel engines.
