496,604. Pressure gauges. GIERS, C. A. DE. Aug. 23, 1937, No. 23089. Convention date, June 18. [Class 106 (ii)] A gauge for indicating the depth of liquid in a tank under air pressure, comprises a device responsive to the hydraulic head plus the air pressure, and means for forcing air into said device, and including a second device responsive to the air pressure alone, and mechanical means for connecting and balancing said devices against each other whereby the effect of the air pressure is eliminated. The liquid is forced out of a bell 12 immersed in the tank by air pumped in through pipes 68, 28 by a pump 64. The pipe 32 communicating with the pipe 28 connects to a sylphon 34 acting on one arm of a two-armed lever pivoted on a knife-edge 38. The other arm of the lever is acted upon by a similar sylphon 22 to which is admitted pressure fluid from a pipe 18 communicates with the space above the liquid in the tank 10. An expansion chamber 20 is located in the pipe 18. The lever is moved against the influence of a spring 54 proportionally to the difference between the pressures in the sylphons and movement is transmitted by quadrant and pinion to a pointer 60. The sylphons engage the lever by points 40, 44 engaging cup bearings the one engaged by cup 44 being adjustable by a screw 48 to balance the sylphons when exposed to equal pressures.
