Abstract

554,722. Differential pressure gauges. B. & R. PATENTS, Ltd., and BIRCH, G. C. R. Dec. 22, 1941, No. 16462. [Class 106 (ii)] A differential pressure gauge comprises two sealed liquid systems extending respectively from two flexible elements directly exposed to two external fluid pressures, whose difference is to be measured, to two metal bellows acting on opposite ends of a normally balanced lever connected to an indicating device. Two small diameter pipes A, A<SP>1</SP> lead from the indicating unit to two elements B, B<SP>1</SP> subjected to the pressures whose difference is to be measured. Each element consists of a pair of cup-shaped diaphragms C, C<SP>1</SP> sealed at the edges and communicating with the pipe A, or A<SP>1</SP>, while being enclosed in a casing C<SP>5</SP> to which pressure is admitted by holes C<SP>6</SP>. The pipes lead to bellows D, D<SP>1</SP> fixed at their lower ends and attached at their upper ends to the ends of lever E on a fixed pivot. A difference in pressure rocks lever E, the movement being transmitted by arm E2, segment F<SP>1</SP> and pinion G<SP>1</SP> to pointer G. The elements B, B<SP>1</SP> and pipes A, A<SP>1</SP> are arranged as close together as possible so as to minimize errors due to temperature. The device may be used for measuring the depth of liquid in a tank, one element being in the bottom of the tank, and the other exposed either to the atmosphere or to the vapour pressure above the liquid level. Another use is to measure the pressure difference on the two sides of a restriction such as a nozzle through which liquid is flowing.
