Abstract
496,595. Filtering air charge ; spray carburetters. BRISTOL AEROPLANE CO., Ltd., FEDDEN, A. H. R., and CULVERWELL, S. June 23, 1937, No. 17516. [Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (iii)] [Also in Group XXVIII] The air intake of an aircraft engine, comprising a casing 20 containing a filter, is located around the driving connection to the airscrew shaft 18. In a radialcylinder engine, the intake is concentric with the entrance 13 for the cooling air to the engine cowling 11. The air enters annular, or quadrant-shaped, chambers 26 by gauze-covered ports 21, and it flows through staggered holes 28, 31 with radially - arranged intermediate layers 29 of filtering material, e.g. porous cotton, located between wire gauze sheets or perforated plates. It leaves by an annular chamber 32 connected by diverging pipes 24 to the carburetter. Further slots on the inner and outer sides of the casing 20 admit air direct to the spaces in front of the filtering material. A valve-controlled byepass 25 is provided for use if the filter becomes choked.
