Abstract

303,763. Brown, C., and Brown & Barlow, Ltd. Oct. 4, 1927. Filtering.-An air filter for a carburettor is adapted to provide automatically for the passage of gases otherwise than through the filtering medium should 'the filter become clogged, or should back pressure occur. The filter comprises a casing j provided with inlet ports k and containing a fabric filter a through which the air passes to the outlet p. The filter a is attached at its ends to wire rings c<1>, b<1> which respectively engage in grooves in an annulus c and a conical valve f. The valve f is held against a seat g provided with ports o by a spring d which abuts also against the annulus c. The seat g is provided with a central aperture s forming a seat for a spring-loaded valve l which is normally open. Should the filter become clogged, the valve f is retracted owing to the filter a being drawn inwards by suction through the coils of the spring d, thus opening the ports o. In the event of back pressure, the valve l closes the aperture s and the gases escape through the ports o.
