Abstract

486,602. Filters. LANGLEY, T. W., and TECALEMIT, Ltd. Dec. 9, 1936, No. 33866. [Class 46] In a filter of the kind comprising a bag of filtering material coiled round a pipe for inlet of liquid, a separator being arranged within the bag and a spacer being arranged between the coils of the bag, bias means are provided to permit the pipe to be moved axially for byepassing liquid when the resistance to flow through the filtering material exceeds a predetermined value. As shown, a casting 1 is provided with an inlet 2 and an outlet 3 and has a flat surface 4 against which is secured a flanged container 5 housing a filtering element 25. This element comprises a bag 12 made from a folded sheet of felt which is sewn along the edges 15, 16, 17, leaving an opening 18 adapted to receive a perforated tube 13. The bag has pieces of string 20 adapted to keep the inner surfaces of the bag separated. The tube 13 is a sliding fit in a hole 11 in the casting 1 and has holes 14 closed by the walls of the casting when the filtering element is in its normal position. The tube is secured by string within the bag and the bag together with a spacing member 21 comprising a corrugated sheet are wrapped round the tube and held in place by two metal rings 22. A spring 24 bears against a disc 26 within the tube 13. Normally the liquid to be filtered flows through the perforations in the tube and through the bag 25. When the pressure of the liquid exceeds a predetermined value the tube 13 slides against the spring pressure and uncovers the holes 14, so that the liquid is byepassed directly into the container 5.
