Abstract

494,869. Cylinders. PETTERS, Ltd., and BROOKS, H. Jan. 6, 1938, No. 449. [Class 7 (ii)] In a two-stroke engine cylinder, which is exhausted from the cylinder head, scavenging air is admitted through piston-controlled ports which are arranged so that in addition to general turbulence, the charge as a whole rotates about the cylinder axis. The Figure shows a cross-section transverse to the cylinder axis through the ports E; the majority of which are tangential to the cylinder in an anticlockwise sense, but some are radial, or tangential in the opposite sense. The ports may all be radial, the directioning being effected by slots in a circumferential part of the piston crown, which need not extend to the full height of the ports.
