Abstract
Shaped articles of Hadfield manganese steel are made by mixing powders containing respectively iron and manganese (i.e. pure iron, pure manganese, ferromanganese or oxides of iron and manganese) causing the particles to cohere under pressure, heating, e.g. at 1500-2000 DEG F., if necessary in a reducing atmosphere so that the particles remain unalloyed but coalesce, cooling, shaping, and heating, e.g. at 2250-2650 DEG F., if necessary in a reducing atmosphere so that the particles alloy. The final alloy should contain 7-20 per cent of manganese and 0,47-2 per cent of carbon and may also contain up to 20 per cent of one or a mixture of two or more of the metals molybdenum, tungsten, chromium, and vanadium, as well as sulphur, phosphorus, and silicon. The starting-materials should therefore contain sufficient of these substances to provide the desired proportions. In the case of molybdenum, tungsten, chromium, and vanadium the starting-materials may be the carbides of these metals.
