Abstract
Tantalum carbide is made by mixing powdered tantalum or tantalum oxide with carbon which has been purified by heating, and highly heating the mixture.ALSO:A hard alloy, particularly for tools, consists of 3-15 per cent of one or more of the metals iron, nickel, and cobalt, and the remainder tantalum carbide, with or without free tantalum. For example, the alloy may consist of 10 per cent of nickel and the remainder tantalum and carbon in the proportion of 94,25 to 5,75. Tantalum carbide is made by mixing powdered tantalum or tantalum oxide with carbon which has been purified by heating, and highly heating the mixture. The resulting carbide is finely powdered, mixed with hydrogen-reduced iron, nickel, or cobalt powder, and the mixture is very finely ground and subjected to high pressure, the product being heated at 1350-1400 DEG C.
