Abstract
Tungsten and tantalum carbides may be made by heating to about 2000 DEG C. powdered tungsten or tantalum, or mixtures thereof, or their oxides, with lampblack or charcoal which has been preheated to remove impurities and gases. The proportions are preferably about 3,1 or 6,17 per cent of carbon to 96,9 or 93,83 per cent of tungsten, and 6,2 per cent of carbon to 93,8 per cent of tantalum. The resulting carbides are ground and degasified.ALSO:Hard alloys consist of an auxiliary metal, preferably one or more of the metals iron, nickel, and cobalt, and carbides of tungsten and tantalum, and contain no appreciable amount of free tungsten or tantalum. Carbides of tungsten and tantalum may be replaced by carbides of molybdenum and niobium. Tungsten and tantalum carbides may be made by heating to about 2000 DEG C. a mixture of powdered tungsten or tantalum, or mixtures thereof, or their oxides, with lampblack or charcoal which has been preheated to remove impurities and gases. The proportions are preferably about 3,1 or 6,17 per cent of carbon to 96,9 or 93,83 per cent of tungsten, and 6,2 per cent of carbon to 93,8 per cent of tantalum. The resulting carbides are ground and degasified and mixed with 5-9 per cent of nickel, which may be added in the form of hydrogen-reduced powder in presence of a liquid hydrocarbon. The mixture is pressed and heated in a reducing atmosphere.
