Abstract
491,521. Soot blowers. LUMB, C. E., and DIAMOND BLOWER CO., Ltd. March 4, 1937, No. 6435. [Class 99 (ii)] A soot blower for a boiler comprises a blower nozzle 1 secured on the end of a spindle 6 which is rotated by a shaft 12 through bevel wheels 18, 19 and is also displaced axially by the engagement of a cam pin 13 thereon with a helical groove 14 in a tubular extension 15 of the blower housing 4 through which it projects. The bevel wheel 18 is mounted on the spindle by a key and slot connection 20, and the groove preferably terminates in an annular portion 17 so as to permit simple rotation of the nozzle in its advanced or operative position. A cleaning - fluid supply valve 7 and a piston 10 are also mounted on the spindle 6, and the relative areas of the nozzle, supply valve and piston are such that the pressure of the cleaning fluid will assist in moving the nozzle to its operative position and holding it there, and also, when the nozzle is retracted, to retain it in this position with the valve firm upon its seating 8. In Fig. 4 the bevel wheel 18 is freely mounted on the spindle 6 and is provided with a driving pin 23 for engagement with the projecting end of the cam pin 13 ; in Fig. 5 the cam pin 13a projects from the extension 15a of the housing and the coacting groove 25 is formed in a member 26 which is adjustably mounted on a chainwheel 27 secured to the spindle 6.
