Abstract

483,007. Soot blowers. SPEARS, F. G. W. Oct. 5, 1936, No. 26980. [Class 99 (ii)] A soot blower comprises a blower tube 1, with end nozzle 2, which is movable axially in a casing 8, preferably by rack-and-pinion mechanism 4, 5, and is adapted to be rotated by the engagement of rollers &c. 16 mounted in an extension 3 of the blower tube with a guide member 15 which projects into said extension. The guide member 15 is preferably in the form of a partly straight and partly helically twisted bar, and it is fixed to the end cover 17 of an extension 7 of the casing 8 or to a ratchet wheel 18 with which a pawl 19 on the extension 7 engages, the latter arrangement permitting rotation of the blower tube only during axial movement in one direction. Cleaning fluid is supplied to the blower tube in its operative position through ports 11 therein from a branch 8a on the casing 8, leakage being prevented by packings 14 compressed against the ends of an interposed ported sleeve 13.
