Abstract

456,718. Soot blowers. SIMPSON, J. W. L., Sherwood, Mostyn Avenue, Littleover, Derby. Feb. 13, 1935, Nos. 4676 and 30907. [Class 99 (ii)] In a soot blower of the kind in which a nozzle 1 is mounted on the end of an axially-movable blower tube 2, the supply of cleaning fluid to the nozzle is controlled by a valve 11 which is normally located between seating members 13, 14 in the supply conduit 9 and at the inner end of the blower tube respectively. The arrangement is such that, upon projection of the nozzle into its operative position, the valve will be maintained on its seating 14 by the pressure of the cleaning fluid until the head 12<a> of the valve rod 12 abuts against a collar in the seating 13, when the seating 14 will move away from the valve and permit passage of cleaning fluid; also when the nozzle is retracted the seating 14 will first abut against and close the valve and then return the valve to its original position. As shown, axial movement of the blower tube is effected by a hand wheel &c. through a worm 8 and worm wheel 5, the latter being in engagement with a screwthreaded sleeve 6 freely mounted on the blower tube extension 2<c> and provided with longitudinal keyways 2b engaging fixed keys 7<a> in the blower housing 7 ; the blower tube may also be caused to rotate by providing it with a helical channel 18 for engagement by a pin 17 on the front end 7b of the said housing 7. In a modification the combined axial and rotational movement of the blower is effected by keying the worm wheel 5 to the extension 2<c> and providing the tube 2 with a screw thread for engagement with a thread formed in the front end of the housing 7. The blower tube is cooled by a cooling medium which is circulated through the housing 7 from a port 21 to outlet passages 21<a>.
