Abstract

492,295. Soot - blowers. BABCOCK & WILCOX, Ltd., and GLINN, R. J. March 17, 1937, No. 7886. [Class 99 (ii)] In a boiler soot-blower of'the kind comprising a blower tube 1 with an end nozzle 2 which is advanced into and retracted from its operative position and simultaneously rotated by suitable mechanism 25, the supply of cleaning fluid to the blower tube is controlled by a valve 5. The valve 5 is normally held on its seating 6 by a spring-pressed piston 8 which is located in a chamber 9 and is provided with an aperture 10 through which cleaning fluid from the supply pipe 4 may leak, the latter assisting the spring 7 in maintaining the valve closed against the pressure of the cleaning fluid in the supply pipe, and the valve being opened when the leakage fluid pressure is released. This release is effected by a pilot valve 13 which is located in a housing 12 to which an outlet conduit 11 from the chamber 9 leads and which is provided with an exhaust-vent 16, the valve 13 being opened by a cam 17 on the blower tube when the latter is in or near its operative position. The piston 8 may be formed integral with the valve 5, and the cam 17 may be so shaped that it maintains the valve 13 open only while the nozzle is turning through a predetermined angle and is directed towards a particular part of the boiler.
