Abstract

399,892. Valves. BABCOCK & WILCOX, Ltd., Babcock House, Farringdon Street, London, and GIBSON, J. H., 26, Drumoyne Avenue, Glasgow. April 21, 1932, No. 11438. [Class 135.] In an air-release valve for use on boilers, steam pipes, feed pipes, or other pressure containers, the member 2 affording the valve seating is formed as a cylindrical sleeve providing an annular passage between it and the valve body 4 for the passage of air or steam and serving to guide a pistonlike valve 1 which is freely exposed to the pressure behind it, said sleeve being provided above the normal open position of the valve with one or more ports 5 leading through the valve body to a diffuser outlet 6. The valve 1 is balanced by a spring 7 or by its weight alone, and may be operated manually by a hand-wheel 12 connected to the valve stem 11 by a loose coupling 14 permitting, also, automatic operation. The strength of the spring 7 may be varied by adjustment of the screw plug 18. An indicator 17 shows whether the valve is in the shut, automatic, or open position.
