Abstract
596,252. Soot-blowers. BABCOCK & WILCOX, Ltd., ZOLLER, R. E., and WEEKS, E. G. July 18, 1945, No. 18404. Addition to 565,110. [Class 99 (ii)] In a soot-blower according to the parent Specification in which the velocity of discharge of the cleaning fluid is varied in a predetermined manner by a cam-operated valve during the rotation of the blower tube so as to obtain a more nearly uniform impact of the fluid on all the surfaces to be cleaned, the cam-operated stop valve controlling the discharge from the blower tube is utilized to vary the rate of discharge. The device is applied to sootblowers described in Specification 567,166 with blower tubes of either retractable or non- retractable type, in which a spring-urged stop valve is actuated through a tappet and lever bv a cam on the blower tube. The cam profile is symmetrically shaped to give rapid opening and closing of the valve by the portions a, a<1>, a maximum rate of discharge after opening and before closure of the valve by the portions b, b<1>, an increasing or decreasing rate of discharge over the discharge angles c or c<1>, and a minumum rate of discharge over the middle portion d of the angle of discharge.
