Abstract

551,322. Soot blowers. SPEARS, F. G. W., and DIAMOND BLOWER CO., Ltd. Aug. 13, 1941, No. 10310. [Class 99 (ii)] In a soot blower of the kind comprising a steam ejector 9 movable into operative or inoperative position by means of a member such as a screw spindle 24 cooperating with a fixed nut 25, the ejector 9 slides in a tubular extension 4 of the steam chest 1 and is connected by tie rods 13, 15 to a piston 16 loosely connected to the member 24, the inlet to the steam chest being situated between the piston 16 and a valve 14 for admitting steam to the ejector 9. A stud 40 in the piston 16 engages a groove in a sleeve extension 38 of the nut 25, the groove having a straight portion 39 and a helical portion 41. The screw spindle 24 is rotated by means of bevel gearing 31, 30, the gear 30 comprising a cap 28 rotatable in an extension 29 of the nut 25 and fitting upon a squared member 33 on the spindle. The inner end A of the spindle is in frictional engagement with the piston 16 and has a groove 36 engaging a stirrup 37 in the piston, these parts being assembled by tilting the spindle 24 relatively to the piston. The ejector 9 is a piston with steam openings 10 and an outlet nozzle 11. On rotating the spindle 24 by means of the bevel gears 31, 30, its axial movement in the nut 25 moves the valve 14 off its seat to admit steam from the branch 19 and steam chest 1 to the ejector 9, the stud 40 on the piston 16 moving axially in the groove 39. On further axial movement of the spindle 24, the piston 16 and ejector 9 are rotated by the movement of the stud 40 in the helical groove 41. The pressure of steam on the ledge 17 of the piston 16 maintains frictional engagement of the piston with the spindle 24. The travel of the ejector is limited by an exchangeable distance piece 34 in the cap 28. In a modification, the ejector 9 is normally in an extended position, the valve 14 being to the left of its seat and the grooves 39, 41 being reversed. Specification 551,323 is referred to.
