Abstract

1,187,811. Soot blowers. CLYDE BLOWERS Ltd. 6 May, 1967, No. 21171/67. Heading F2N. A soot blower which includes an elongated casing 1, a hollow feed tube 2 with a distributing nozzle, not shown, and movable in the casing, and driving mechanism for the feed tube 2 is characterized in that the driving mechanism is housed in two detachably interconnected end-toend parts, a first part 3, Fig. 1, accommodating the end of the tube 2 which carries a nut 14, and a second part 4, Fig. 5, which carries a reversible motor (9), Fig. 3, not shown, and a rotary drive shaft 6 which is co-axial with the tube 2, has a driving connection with the motor (9), and detachable screw-threaded connection with the nut 14, the second housing part 4 forming, with the bulk driving mechanism, a driving unit which is detachable from the first housing part 3. The motor (9) which is of the airreversible type, has a vertical drive shaft (10) which, through worm reduction gearing, ineluding worm-wheel 20, drives a sleeve 18 on the wheel 20 which, is rotatably mounted by bearings 19, on the drive shaft 6, the outer end of sleeve being drivingly connected, by clutch teeth 23, with a collar 22, which, through squared co-operating portions and a pin 24, is drivingly connected to the shaft 6. The latter has a screw-threaded forward extension 12 which, when the two housing parts 3, 5 are assembled together, engages the nut 14 to move the tube 2 axially, rotation of the tube, at the same time, being effected by means of a stud 17 on the tube 2 which engages in a helical slot 16 in a sleeve 15 fixed within the housing part 3. The squared end. of the shaft 6 can be made accessible for manual driving by removing an end cap 25 and withdrawing the collar 22 and the pin 24. A rocker (32) for reversing the direction of rotation of the motor (9) is pivoted at (31) and is rocked by a pin (33), Fig. 6, not shown, on a nut (39) which is guided by a rod (30) and which engages a threaded shaft 26 rotatable by the shaft 6, through gearing 27, 28, to move the nut (29) along the shaft 6. Provision is made for a dwell at the end of each stroke of the rocker (32). The casing 1 includes an annular chamber 35 with a branch inlet pipe 36 for a pressurized gas, and a ported sleeve 37 within which the tube 2 is slidingly accommodated. When the tube 2 is in its forward position a ported part 38 communicates with the ports in the sleeve 39 to supply compressed gas to the tube end 4, the ports in the sleeve being obturated by a waisted portion of the tube 2 when the latter is retracted. The ports 38 are separated from the portion 40 by piston rings 40.
