Abstract

1,133,949. Soot blowers. DIAMOND POWER SPECIALTY CORP. 6 Dec., 1966 [24 Jan., 1966], No. 54621/66. Heading F2N. [Also in Division B2] A soot blower 10 is provided with a fluid discharge mechanism comprising a tubular nozzle body 45 secured to the end of a rotatable and extendible lance tube 15, a nozzle ball jet 50 universally rockable in the nozzle body to different angular positions relative to the axis of rotation of the lance tube and nozzle body, and means for thus rocking the ball jet during the rotation of the lance tube so that a liquid, e.g. water, jet is discharged at varying angles to said axis of rotation. Rocking of the ball jet is achieved by disc 68 which is rotatably mounted in the nozzle body and which is connected by a pin 55 having one end threadly secured in the ball jet and the other end journalled in an eccentric hole 66 formed in the disc. The lance tube is projected, rotated and retracted to and from its operative position within a boiler by an air motor 28 through reduction gear 30, shaft 32 and gearing 34, a control unit 36 regulating the number of blower operations and terminating said operations when desired operating cycle has been completed. Rotation of the disc 68 at a different relative rotational speed to that of the lance tube and nozzle body to effect rocking of the ball jet is also achieved by said motor through chain drives 77, 80, tubular shaft 74, and a square shaft 72 secured to the disc at one end and telescopically received in the tubular shaft at the other. However, rocking of the ball jet would also be achieved by maintaining the disc stationary. The fluid flow through the ball jet is variably throttled by an element 90 fixed in the nozzle body which progressively obturates the inlet of the flow passage through the ball jet as the inclination of ball jet outlet passage relative to the nozzle body axis decreases. In a modification, Fig. 6 (not shown), the obturating element is formed by a pin (90B) extending axially from square shaft (72b).
