Abstract

The mechanism is for varying the inlet throat area of a radial flow turbine, partic. an IC engine turbocharger. It is a flap (18) mounted with its upstream end on a spindle (20) through the casing so that one side of it forms one of the throat boundaries and turning the spindle varies the throat area. The limits of rotation correspond with flap positions where the flow area is respectively at design value and at the min. value consistent with a not unacceptably large drop in turbine efficiency. The angle between these positions pref. does not significantly exceed 10 deg.
