l LAWN-SPRINKLEB.
i specification of Letters Patent.. Patented June 24, 1919,
Application aied November 9, 191s. serial No. 130,305.
Be it knownthat I, kFRANK L. MORSE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ithaca, in the county of Tompkins and State -of New York, have invented a certain new l and useful Improvement in Lawn-Sprinmeans for varyingthe radial distance to;
klers, of which improvement the following is a specication. g 'f This invention relates to that class of lawn sprinklers having radially extending noz-` zles mounted to rotate and discharge a stream of water throughout a circular area, and the main obgect is to 'provide improved which the water will be thrown, as the arms or nozzles continuato revolve, whereby the water may be uniformly spread over substantially the `full circular area.
' In the accompanying drawingstFigure 1 is a vertical section 'of one form of sprinkler lembodying my improvement; Fig. 2, a vver.-
tical section. of the upper portionof a sprinkler showing-a modification', Fig. 3, a horizontal section'taken through oneof the nozzles of -the lform of construction shown in Fig. 2; Fig. 4, a vertical'section, similar to Fig. 2, but showin another form of nozzles;
ing the successive revolutions Vof the'nozzle` or nozzles.
yAccording to the construction shown in Fig. 1, the sprinkler comprises ,a body portion or casing, 6, having a supporting flange, 7, adapted to restupon the ground, and containing a chamber, 8, anda vertical lhollow cylindrical portion, 9, in which is rotatably finounted the bushing, '10, having the curved or helical bladesor van'es', 11, 'and the hollow head, 12, rotatable'therewith and carrying the hollow radial arms or nozzles, 13.
The head, 12, isformed with a bushing havinga shoulder, v1,4, fitted against `a corresponding shoulder within the vertical cylindrical'fportion, 9, and thereby holding the parts 1n position.
The chamber, 8, is adapted to be connected to the usual hose at the threaded opening, 15, and the force of the water flowingup through the' bushing between the curved blades, 11, serves to impart rotation to the bushing, 10, vt-he head, l2, and the nozzles, 13. The nozzles may be inclined upward at a certain angle, and the WaterL may be discharged through the openings, 16,
at the ends of the nozzles.
For the purpose of automatically varying the` radial distance to which the water is discharged as the nozzles are rotated, I haveV shown in Fig. 1, 'movable deflector plates, 17, mounted on bent levers, 18, over the discharge openings, and connected at their in-` ner ends to a vertical stem, 19, passing down through the axis of the revolving head, and into the chamber, 8, Where it may be provided with a head, 20, bearing against a cam, 21. For driving the cam, I haveshown a gear, 22, mounted axially on the lower endv ofthe revolving bushing, 10, Yand meshing with gear, .23, mounted on a vertical shaft within a frame, 24, and carrying a gworm.
gear, 25, at thelower end meshingwith a gear, 26, on the cam shaft, 27 also mounted inthe frame, 24, and carrying the cam, 21. `The gear 26 is indicated in the conventional mannerwith teeth. shown at one portion, only, but it will, of course, vbe under-Y stood that. the teeth are to extend all the Way around the circumference.
As the bushing is rotated by the forceof the water, the motion is transmitted through the gears, 22, 23, 25, and 26, to rotate the shaft 27, and the cam, 21, thereby imparting a vertical reciprocating movement to the stem, 19. This operates the bent levers,
18, to alternately raise and lower the delec tors, 17, over the nozzle openings from the Vposition shown in full lines to that indicated,
in dotted lines, whereby the issuing stream", of water is thrown through the entire radial distance to the outer circumference of the circular area lwhen the nozzle is unobstructed, and -from this point is deflected gradually down to the base of the s rmkler at the center of said area,` as the eflectorl reaches the position indica-ted in full lines;
vA spring, 28, .may be ven iployed to assist .the
1'0 l\movement of the rod, 19, in one dlrectlon,
and keep the head, 20, in contact with the surface of the cam, 21. This cam may have any suitable curve or contour to produce the desired movement of the deflectors.
15 Another form of means for varying the' `radial distance. to which the water is disw charged during the revolutions of the nozzles, is shown in Figs. 2 and 3, in which, in lieu of the movable dei'lectors, the nozzles themselves are mounted in ihollow swivel `joints, 30, inthe head, 12, andv are adapted to swing vertically by means of the reclprocatory stem, 19. For thisl purpose the stem 'is provided with rack teeth, 31, `at the upper end, which mesh with the segmental gears, 32, rigidly connected with the re- Y spective nozzles, and `mounted .to oscillate upon the respective. axes of said Vswlvel joints. 'In this way, the reciprocatmg movement of the stem, 19, operates toswing the nozzles gradually upward and downward between the position shown in vfull lines and that indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2. v
In the modification shown in Fig. 4, the construction is substantially the same as that of Fi s. 2 and 3, except that the nozzles, 13?, are o va different form, having a hollow cylindrical base portion, '302 fitted within a vcorresponding socket in the head, 12a. The opera-tion is the same as that shown in Figs.
2 and 3, and will be readily understood. l
In Figi 5, the nozzles, 13, are iiXed at a certain angle of elevation, the same as in Fig. 1, and the variation in the radial distance of discharge is obtained by the'regulating valve, 33, whichis actuated by 'the stern, 19, and is alternately raised `-and lowered toward and from its seat, thereby varying the force of the stream discharged through the nozzle or nozzles, and consequently gradually varying the radial discharge distance as the nozzles revolve.
Thus it will be seen that inpall of the modifications shown, a stream of water is discharged from each nozzle during the suc-l cessive revolutions of the same, and. that the l'radial distance'to. whichthe Water is Having now described my invention,
ated .by the flow of the water for revolving .said head, a'reciprocatory member, mecha- `actuated by said stem vfor gradually varying the radial distance of discharge.`
