Abstract
1,160,439. Soot-blowers. J. E. J. DULAIT. 19 Sept., 1966 [21 Sept., 1965], No. 41774/66. Heading F2N. A soot-blower for cleaning heat exchangers and boilers comprises a lance unit 1 mounted on a rail-guided trolley 6 for movement therewith, said unit comprising two telescopic tubular components 18 and 19, the outer component being rotatably-driven and the inner component having at least one blowing nozzle 2 at one end and a tapping 22 on its inside wall at its other end which engages a tubular screw 23 mounted in the trolley, longitudinal interengaging slides and lugs 24, 25 being provided on the inner and outer tubular components whereby rotation of the outer component relative to the inner component produces relative longitudinal movement between the two components. The outer tubular component is fixedly secured to a tubular casing 10 which is rotatably driven in the trolley through gears 16, 16<SP>1</SP> and square shaft 17 from a reduction gear motor (not shown) which also effects movement of the trolley along rail 4 through chain 7. The tubular screw may be rotationallyfixed to the trolley. Alternatively, as shown, the screw may be rotatably driven preferably in the opposite direction to the outer component by gears 27, 28, 29 so that relative inner/outer component displacement can be achieved with a practical screw pitch on the tubular screw. Blowing fluid is controllably fed to a feed tube, which is coaxial of and opens into the tubular screw, by a valve 13 actuated on trolley movement by a cam and lever arrangement, illustrated in a known soot blower of Figs. 1A, 1B (not shown), and a portion of the blowing fluid is bled through ports 32 in the tubular screw to the space between the tubular components to cool the same and to cool a bearing 21 between the outer end of the outer component and the inner component, said bearing being mounted of fins 38 to permit the passage of fluid therepast. In modified embodiments, Fig. 3A, 3B and Figs. 4A, 4B (not shown), the outer tubular component is formed by two concentric tubes 33, 33<SP>1</SP>, all or part of the blowing fluid passing to the annular space between said tubes. In a modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), the annular space between the concentric tubes is fed from a separate annular chamber 42 fixed to the trolley and connected to the blowing fluid supply pipe.
