Abstract
542,242. Soot-blowers. IVOR POWER SPECIALITY CO., Ltd., and MOSES, R. I. May 29,1940, No. 9417. [Class 99 (ii)] A rotating blower tube 1, Fig. 2, which slides over a stationary fluid supply conduit 9 is driven through gearing with the wheel 7 of which the blower tube has a screw connection so as to advance the tube into its operative position. Admission of steam to the conduit 9 is controlled by a compound valve actuated through a rod 36, a bell-crank 32 and a ball 31 with which engages a cam 24 on a sleeve 8 secured to the blower tube. A pawl 27, Fig. 4, carried by a fixed casing 17 holds the sleeve 8 against rotation in a clockwise direction by engaging a pin 20 thus ensuring that the cam remains out of contact with the ball 31 when the blower tube is retracted. The compound valve comprises a pilot valve 49, Fig. 5, which is driven from the rod 36 and a main steam admission valve 51 in which the pilot valve is housed. Steam is admitted to the back of the pilot valve through passages between the sleeve 52 and the main valve. In the form of blower shown in Fig. 8 there is no provision for advancing and retracting the blower tube ; the tube is rotated by a wheel 7 and projects always beyond the furnace or boiler wall 1<SP>1</SP> being supported at its driven end by a steam supply conduit 9 on which bears a sleeve 1a secured to the blower tube. The valve cam 24, which is similar to that shown in Figs. 2 and 4, is mounted on a sleeve 7a having an internal thread which engages a similar screw thread on the sleeve la. Should it be necessary to reverse the direction of rotation of the blower the sleeve 7a slides on the tube 1a and moves the cam out of line with the ball 31 thus putting the steam admission valves out of action. Specification 487,861 is referred to.
