Abstract
666,223. Soot blowers. BABCOCK & WILCOX, Ltd. Aug. 5, 1948 [Aug. 5, 1947], No. 20668/48. Class 99 (ii) A tube 80 having a discharge nozzle 98 is axially projected and retracted within a rotatablymounted tube 46 by a screw-device, which may comprise a helical key 84, of a rotatable nut 72, engaging in a groove 82 of tube 80, rendered effective by restraining means, such as the shoulder 134 of a flange 114 secured to tube 46 and engaging a stop 136 of a pivoted trigger 124, Fig. 3, that prevents rotation of tube 46 which, when tube 80 is in the projected position, is freed by release means, such as a latch 140 bearing against the shoulder and carried by the trigger, so that both tubes rotate together. Associated with the tubes are valve means 28 for controlling the supply of cleaning fluid to the tubes.- The nut may be rotated by gears 108, 110 connected to a manually-operated or motordriven chainwheel 102. During projection and retraction, tube 80 may be prevented from rotating by keys 90, 92 of tube 46 engaging in longitudinal grooves 86, 88 of tube 80. As the projecting movement of tube 80 is completed a member 158 of the tube abuts the keys, which may be initially separated from the nut by a space, to axially shift the tube 46, the flange carrying the latch against the action of a spring 144 until the shoulder is disengaged from the stop to permit the tubes to rotate in unison. A cam 120 carried by the flange operates the trigger that actuates, through a spring-loaded stem 30, the valve, so that cleaning fluid is admitted to and during each revolution of the tubes. In a modification, the latch is eliminated and a compression spring encircling tube 46 replaces spring 144.
