Convention date, March 29, 1934. [Class 99 (ii)] In a soot blower for a boiler, a nozzle 30 located on the end of a blower tube 11 is adapted to be retracted into the wall box 43 of the boiler and to be advanced into operative position by a chainwheel 5 which is geared to a pinion 10 formed with an internally-screwthreaded part to engage a screwthread on the blower tube, a member 44 secured to the wall box being provided with a tooth 15 to coact either with a longitudinal groove 16 on the blower tube to prevent rotation of the latter during its advancing and retracting movements or with an annular groove 19 thereon in its advanced position. Cleansing fluid is supplied to the blower through pipes 7, 34, the supply being controlled by a valve 33 which is opened and closed by a lever 26 under the action of a cam 24 on a collar 17 secured to the end of the blower tube, the cam 24 coacting with the lever 26 when the blower is advanced and the collar 17 abuts against the hub 18 of the pinion 10. Fig. 3 shows a detent mechanism which after a complete rotation of the blower tube locks it against rotation but permits its retraction and which comprises two spring- pressed pawls 39, 48 pivoted in blocks 36, 50 mounted, the latter slidably, in a groove of the member 44. When the blower tube is advanced a lug 40 on the collar 17 bears against the pawl 39 and pushes it inwardly to permit counterclockwise rotation thereof. Shortly before a complete rotation of the blower tube is effected however the lug first rides over the pawl 48 and presses it inwardly and then strikes the face of the pawl 39 and pushes it to the left with the block 50 ; at the same time the lug 40 releases the pawl 48 which moves forward behind the lug. The said lug is now held between the two pawls and further rotation of the blower is prevented, but since the tooth 15 is again in alignment with the groove 16 the blower tube may be retracted by rotation of the chainwheel in the opposite direction.
