Abstract
532,693. Soot blowers. BABCOCK & WILCOX, Ltd. July 26, 1939, No. 21697. Convention date, Aug. 17, 1938. [Class 99 (ii)] In a boiler cleaner operated by a screw device arranged so that, when the driving-member is rotated in one direction, the blower tube is projected to its operative position and is then rotated, but is retracted when the rotation of the driving- member is reversed, the blower tube 73 is moved forwards by rotation of a square shaft 97 carrying an arm 105 with roller 106 working in a spiral 75, the roller 106, when the blower tube reaches its operative position, entering a notch 108 in a latch ring 107, which rotates freely with the blower tube as the shaft is rotated in the same direction. When, however, the rotation of the shaft is reversed, the ring 107 is held against rotation by a one-way detent, and the roller 106 returns into the spiral 75, so that the blower tube is retracted. In the operative position, ports 114 in the blower tube coincide with inlet ports 115 for the cleaning-fluid, while in the retracted position they co-operate with a cooling-fluid inlet 118. In a modification, the driving- shaft 97 is formed with a screwthread engaging a key on the blower tube, which is thus projected without rotation, the key entering a slot in the latch ring at. the end of the forward movement.
