Abstract

491,224. Luminescent materials. FRANCO-BRITISH ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd., and BRACKENSEY, A. H. Feb. 26, 1937, No. 5895. [Class 98 (i)] Fluorescent material giving white light by the combination of the secondary light from the material with primary light from an electric low pressure mercury discharge tube comprises zinc and beryllium silicates, the former corresponding to the formula ZnO.SiO2, and manganese used as the activator. The proportion of Zn to Be reckoned as oxide may be about 3:1. In one example of preparation, zinc oxide, silica, and beryllium oxide are mixed dry and a 5 per cent solution of manganese nitrate added to form a paste which is dried at 150‹ C. and fired at 1100‹ C. The resulting powder is ground and refined, these steps being repeated if desired. Aluminium oxide may be added to the initial mixture in a proportion up to one-quarter of the quantity of beryllium. The proportion of manganese present may be up to 1À25 per cent of the total content of the mixture. Specification 480,356 is referred to.
