Abstract

Materials resulting from the sintering together of magnesium oxide and titanium dioxide are employed in conjunction with electric discharge devices, especially high or low-pressure mercury discharge tubes, to produce a red luminescence. A small quantity of chromium may be present as activator. The proportion of titanium dioxide may vary from 10 per cent to 53 per cent and from 1 to 5 per cent of beryllium oxide may be included in the mixture. The constituents are mixed and ground wet. The mixture is then filtered, dried, and moulded and is sintered at between 1400 and 1500 DEG C. resulting in a ceramic material which may be used to form part of the envelope of the discharge device or be applied thereto as a powder in a binding material. The preferred composition is 47 per cent titanium dioxide, 48 per cent of magnesium oxide, 5 per cent beryllium oxide, and ,5 per cent of chromium.
